MHEC-SAC Report Praises ³ÉÈ˶¶ÒõAdvising Program
Compiling data from students and advising offices at four-year higher education institutions in Maryland, members of the SAC offered a comparison of advising programs. The resulting report ranked three institutions – SU, St. Mary’s College and the University of Maryland College Park – as the state’s most effective.
³ÉÈ˶¶Òõreceived no recommendations for improvement.
“Essentially, the academic advising program at Salisbury University is excellent and should not be changed,” the report said.
A major component of SU’s advising success has been its commitment to students, said SU’s SAC representative, Darren Jackson.
“³ÉÈ˶¶Òõis totally student-oriented,” he said.
Unlike some schools ranking lower in the report, ³ÉÈ˶¶Òõ assigns each student an advisor/mentor during freshman year. These advisors remain with the student throughout the his or her time at the University. An emphasis is placed on a personal understanding of each student’s needs.
“It comes down to having one person for each student,” Jackson said.
³ÉÈ˶¶Òõoffers advising in academic and career planning, as well as personal development.
