Academic Portfolio Assessment

Academic Affairs is committed to the ongoing assessment of its academic portfolio to ensure alignment with our mission: to provide students with programs that “empower our students with the knowledge, skills, and core values that contribute to active citizenship, gainful employment, and life-long learning.”

Guiding Principles

We will be guided by the following principles:

  • Academic Quality
  • Evidence-Based Decision Making
  • Shared Governance
  • Transparency

Priorities

Our priorities are to:

  • Enhance Operational Efficiency
  • Ensure Sustainability and Impact
  • Promote Student Success
  • Support Faculty Excellence

The Process

Step 1: Conduct Program Strength Assessment

A one-time assessment conducted by an external partner will provide an unbiased comparison of all programs, based on internal performance and external market outlook.

  • External Partner: Education Advisory Board (EAB)
  • Pre-defined metrics: (TBD)
  • Upon Completion Programs will be classified into four categories: Maintain, Invest, Monitor, Reimagine.

Step 2: Create an Academic Planning Working Group

A shared governance body will be established to focus on portfolio health by developing a strategic process for evaluating programs using broader, more detailed metrics.

  • Representatives:
    • Long Range Academic Planning (LRAP),
    • Faculty from each school or college
    • Provost Office
    • University Analysis, Reporting & Assessment (UARA)
    • Finance or Budget Officer
    • Enrollment Management
    • Library
    • Student
  • This process will complement the existing Academic Program Review (APR).
  • Visit the Academic Planning Working Group webpage for more information (Coming Soon).

Step 3: Continued Use of the Academic Program Review (APR) Process

The APR process is an approved method for evaluating individual programs on a 7-year cycle. It assesses each program’s learning outcomes and reviews metrics such as enrollment, degrees granted, time-to-degree, and retention. The process allows departments to reflect on the progress of their programs over the last seven years and creates an opportunity to create an updated action plan for the next seven.
